Statement

My 30 year involvement with art has taken me through a progression with mediums.

Art school in the 70’s found me exploring the character and quality of line with extensive charcoal and pencil drawing.  My interest in colour grew in the 80’s as I moved into watercolor and eventually oil.

It was through working in oil that I became aligned with the idea of developing a piece from dark to light. My discovery of pastel in the mid 80’s, satisfied a desire to return to drawing coupled with my passion for extensive colour.  Out of habit in working  dark to light, I began  choosing darker papers and ultimately began working on pure black surfaces.

Currently I develop my pieces leaving the black of the paper as my darkest skies, while sketching my compositions using medium dark shadow colours. As the piece progresses, I work to bring the highlights out with more opaque and deliberate strokes.

I feel my pieces grow out from darkness naturally, just as if the sun was slowly rising and illuminating the composition from within.
